Project 2 - Minima ( Physical Model )

Below you will find some images of my Minima model. The physical model is at a 1:20 scale and only 3/4's clad , to demonstrate the ribb system from which it is built up from .Thus showing that the design is infact demountable .

Project 3 Laws - Nat, Luciano, Mitch

LAWS

We will each put an equal amount of time and effort into the project.

We will offer each other constructive criticism in order to lift our over all standard of work.

We will arrange meetings in advance and not at the last minute so that we can all make an effort to attend.

We will listen to each member and consider their ideas and opinions.

We will work consistantly throughout the project to make sure nothing is done at the last minute.

We agree to resolve any issues that may occur during the project.

We will assign specific tasks to members based on their strengths.

Project 2 - Minima

Hey Everyone, here are my final 3 A3 posters for project 2 - Minima.

ANALYSIS
CONCEPT & PROCESS

SYNTHESIS

The task of project 2 was to design a self-contained,demountable,relocatable living capsule for 1 person.During my design process ,as seen in poster 1,I turned to nature, where i found most things were rounded and organic in form.Circles and thus in turn rounded objects offered the most efficient use of space. This was particularly integral to achieving a successful minimal space.Further this streamlined form would form a fundamental basis for my design progression as it was well suited - offering a kind of resistance to the windy site conditions posed.

In creating this minimal capsule ,I wanted to take advantage of the great free views on offer and have thus included the large rear window system. However such an feature introduced the site specific problem of the harsh north sun.I have attempted to address this issue by including a large screen ,which could further add interesting shading.

I have based my internal living spaces on a central unit, where the study, bathroom & kitchen form a base, and bed rests above. The bed can be easily accessed with a small ladder.I have based this on the design of children's bunk beds ,which often have integrated study areas below. The idea of having the bed high above serves to the notion of 'prospect and refuge'.

I have addressed the requirement of assembly/dissembly by creating a basic frame/rib system which can then be easily clad with a series of lightweight fibreglass panels.

Cheers,

Nat

Project 2 Minima - Site Context

ACTUAL SITE

Below I have attached some photos of our group site for locating the minima. The site chosen was located just north of the Western Beach Rd. entrance of the Waterfront campus. To keep things simple , the site is literally the bark filled pit you see the right (~7 x 16 m).

Minima posters

Hi, Sophie again. We are already into Domus and i have not yet put up my Minima posters. So here they are. i'm, afraid they are a bit dark -i brightened them in photoshop but when i uploaded them to blogger all the colours changed, so i've had to put the original photos in.

Minima context image

This is my context image, showing the Minima on the waterfront site. I inverted the image to make it look like night, showing the Minima lit from within like a lantern.

My Minima

Hello to all!
Below are some initial images of my Minima project. The concept was partly inspired by the site that we chose - right beside the water. my idea is that of a beacon of light, like a lighthouse, by the water's edge. So i created the Minima to represent a lantern. The consertina shape came about through exlporations of how to deconstruct and move the Minima - the consertina allows the Minima to simply compress down into a much smaller form. The design has ended up being rather sculptural, which i am very happy with, it seems to work well on the waterfront.

Project 1 : MINIMAL

Hey Everyone !

Below I have attached my final A1 Minimal posters : the first depicts my understanding of the concept of 'minimal' , and the latter my concept & design process for assignment 1.

Just to rehash on the first SRD 263 project . Essentially we had to resolve the design issue of scale , to form a minimal living space . In order to effectively resolve the brief we explored anthropometric geometry . In effect we investigated the dimensions of the human body relative to ourselves , and further how this in turn related back to design . Clearly relationships existed between body , object & space . Panero & Zelnik's 'Anthropometric theory' (1979) was particularly useful in my design process as it comprehensively investigated anthropometrics , ergonomics & space .

Interestingly , despite being limited to create a minimal space , it was integral not to sacrifice comfort to form . Furthermore the task of using only basic materials such as concrete & plywood proved to be quite a challenge . In particular , I felt quite restricted in the forms I could achieve using such rigid blocks.

In retrospective , the part that I struggled most with in this particular project was the task of putting forth 3 proposals for a minimal dwelling . Typically when going from a brief to a solution , my natural progression is to stubbornly follow through with an original design idea . I found that when working with a number of proposals , should I ever get hung up on one particular design feature , that I would get easily distracted . Simply I would resume with an alternate design , instead of resolving the actual design issue that had come up and thus never really progressed in my final resolutions . Effectively this task has showed me alot about my own design strategies.

Cheers,

Nat
